District Festival Competitions are held annually
in 47 locations throughout the province

Beginning in March and ending in May. Scholarships and awards are available locally at each District Festival. Please refer to the individual festival pages below for detailed information (festival dates, entry fees, scholarships restrictions, etc.).

SMFA has a long history of classical competitive festivals in the Province of Saskatchewan.Anniversaries are a time of celebration; they are also a time of sober reflection and assessment. Scholarship Regulations
Scholarships & Awards will be awarded to Kindersley District and Oyen District participants only. These participants are defined as:

  1. Students residing within the boundaries of the former Kindersley School Division; Oyen, Plenty, Dodsland area students.
  2. Any student furthering their education elsewhere, but still supported by parents living in former Kindersley or Oyen School Districts; Pupils of Kindersley, Oyen, Plenty, Dodsland music teachers regardless of (student’s) residence.
  3. A resident of the Kindersley District or Oyen area, studying with an outside teacher.

In order to qualify for a scholarship or award, a competitor must:

  1. Piano and Speech Art Disciplines – Enter and compete in at least two solo classes in the same discipline. School Choruses and Choral Speech classes do not qualify as a second class.
  2. Vocal & Musical Theatre disciplines enter and compete in at least two solo classes in Vocal or Musical Theatre.
  3. Instrumental Disciplines (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Strings) – Enter and compete in at least two classes in the same discipline, at least one class being a solo.
  4. Duets, Ensembles or Chorus/Choir Awards in any discipline will be awarded on the merit of those performances only.  Adjudicator’s decision is final on whether the quality of a performance warrants a scholarship or award. Where performance is not up to a satisfactory standard, scholarship or award may not  be presented.

Eligibility of a participant to compete: Adult music teachers who have students competing in the Kindersley District Music Festival are ineligible to compete, in the same discipline as their students. All teachers are welcome to enter the festival for adjudication only.

Requests for Programming Changes, after the program has been published, will be considered under the following circumstances and stipulations:

  1. That the participant will perform for the adjudicator “For Adjudication Only”
  2. The arrangements for a different time or place in program will be made by collaboration between the session coordinator and the adjudicator, and not disrupt the regular program for other participants.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
Competitors must perform in two classes of the same discipline to qualify for a scholarship or award. Participants must reside within 100 km radius of the town of Spiritwood in order to qualify for scholarships. There is no limit to the number of times a student can be selected as the Outstanding Performer of the Festival, but the student may not be selected for more than two (2) consecutive years.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
To qualify for a Borderland scholarship or award, each performer must:

  • enter and perform at least TWO classes in the same discipline (i.e. two piano classes or two vocal classes). These classes include solo or duet classes.
  • reside in  the communities of Bengough, Coronach, Ogema, Pangman, Rockglen, or Scobey.

Competition is open to all Saskatchewan residents and those residing within 100 km of the Saskatchewan border. Participants from outside the Borderland area may enter for Adjudication and Recommendation to Provincials.

Not all scholarships may be awarded. All scholarships and awards are awarded at the Adjudicator’s discretion. A list of Scholarships & Awards will be printed in the district festival program.

Requests for locally added “Additions to Syllabus Classes” must be made in writing to the Committee prior to their January 22, 2015 meeting. A complete list of classes may be obtained from the Secretary.

Please Note:

  • To be recommended as a District Winner, a competitor must have entered and competed in at least two solo classes in the same discipline (excluding the National Class) at the local level. Instrumentalists must compete in two classes on the same instrument. Any entry forms marked TBA or participants changing their music selection after the entry deadline will perform for adjudication only. This means a mark will not be given and the participant may not be eligible for scholarships.
  • Photocopied music will not be allowed.

  • Achieve a mark of 87 or higher in one performance in one of their classes.

Moose Jaw Music Festival

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
To be eligible for any scholarships or awards, competitor must be a resident of Moose Jaw or district or studying with a Moose Jaw teacher, and be 19 years of age or younger. To qualify for the Thursday night scholarship competition competitors must:

  • achieve a mark of 87 or higher in one of their classes;
  • be performing music that is of sufficient standard;
  • perform from memory during festival;
  • be available to stay for the entire competition and deliberations;
  • compete in two solo classes in the same discipline;

Recipients of all awards and scholarships, including those announced on Thursday night, must attend the Sunday Concert or send a delegate to receive it, or the award will be forfeited.

Changes will only be considered for conflicts within our festival. We cannot accommodate ANY special requests. The Moose Jaw Music Festival is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

Competition is open to all Saskatchewan residents or those residing within 100 km of any Saskatchewan border.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
To qualify for a trophy and most scholarships, solo competitors must be under 19 years of age and achieve a mark of 85 or more. In most cases, competitors must have performed in at least two solo classes in the same discipline, one of which must be a test piece or a piece of provincial or national status. Exceptions to the rule regarding the test piece requirement are students in the First Year of Instruction classes, those under 7 years of age and some open scholarships. The adjudicator’s decision regarding scholarships will be final. Please refer to the local program for a complete listing of scholarships and awards.

COMPETITORS CHOSEN TO RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP OR AWARD MUST ATTEND AND PERFORM IN THE AWARDS CONCERT TO RECEIVE THEIR AWARD. Failure to attend and perform in the Awards Concert will result in the automatic forfeit of the scholarship or award and it will be awarded to the next eligible competitor.
